HSPT Format and Structure
Verbal – 16 minutes (60 questions)

Reading – 25 minutes (62 questions)
10 minute break
Mathematics – 45 minutes (64 questions)
Language Skills – 25 minutes (60 questions)
The HSPT contains 298 multiple-choice questions. These are divided into five sections – Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, Mathematics, and Language Skills. A sample HSPT score report reveals a national composite percentile rank for the student. The student receives scores in seven different areas. These are then divided into cognitive skills and basic skills. The percentile ranking system allows schools to compare candidates based upon grade level. The HSPT verbal section contains synonyms, antonyms, and analogies. The quantitative section is comprised of geometric and non-geometric comparisons. There are also “numbers and series” problems on the HSPT quantitative section. HSPT math prep covers algebra, arithmetic, problem solving, and plane geometry. For the HSPT reading section, the student needs to understand the main idea behind a passage. Instead of the writing sample section that you see on the SSAT and ISEE, the HSPT contains a language skills section. This entails spelling, usage, capitalization, and punctuation type questions. These “identifying error” questions are not seen on the SSAT. The HSPT does not require a student essay or writing sample. We offer baseline testing for the HSPT. Our HSPT reports are shared with our tutors and a program is customized based upon individual student needs.
One common HSPT strategy involves answering every single multiple-choice question. Unlike the SSAT, there is no penalty for answering incorrectly on the HSPT. Students can only be awarded points and these are tallied into a raw score. Raw scores are converted to scale scores on a scale of 200-800. The maximum HSPT score is 800. An optional section of the test does exist, but it is not factored into the percentile ranking. Some schools may require the student to take one of the optional sections: Science, Mechanical Aptitude, or Religion. The Scholastic Testing Service (STS) doesn’t recommend taking the HSPT more than once. If the student takes the test a second time, the lower of the two scores is accepted. This differs from the SSAT, where a student can take all eight national testing dates, and have the opportunity to submit higher test scores.
